Punta Cana Excursions

Stretching for nearly 50 km along the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana and Bávaro Beach consistently ranks among the world’s most beautiful beaches — and it earns that reputation every single day. With powder-white sand as fine as flour, warm turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and an almost year-round calm sea (thanks to the natural reef barrier), Bávaro is simply stunning.

Whether you’re staying at one of the dozens of all-inclusive resorts that line the shore or visiting for the day as part of an excursion, here’s everything you need to know.

Where Is Bávaro Beach?

Bávaro is a beach town located in the municipality of Higüey, in the province of La Altagracia — the easternmost point of the Dominican Republic. When people refer to “Punta Cana beach,” they usually mean the long arc of coastline that encompasses Bávaro to the north and Punta Cana village to the south.

Most of the large resort hotels are concentrated in the Bávaro zone, which sits north of Punta Cana International Airport.

What Makes Bávaro Beach So Special?

Several factors combine to make Bávaro one of the Caribbean’s elite beaches:

  • The sand — soft, white, and almost painfully photogenic.
  • The water — warm year-round (26–28°C), shallow near shore, and protected by a barrier reef that keeps waves gentle.
  • The palm trees — the entire beach is lined with coconut palms that provide natural shade and the quintessential Caribbean backdrop.
  • The color — on a sunny day, the water shifts from pale turquoise near shore to deep sapphire blue further out. It’s one of the most distinctive color palettes in the Caribbean.

Sections of Bávaro Beach

The beach can be divided into several zones:

Cabeza de Toro (northern tip): quieter, less developed, home to some of Punta Cana’s most exclusive resorts including the Punta Cana Resort & Club.

Bávaro center: the heart of the resort zone, lined with large all-inclusives like Barceló, Iberostar, Meliá, and Royalton. Lively and social.

Los Corales: a slightly more local-feeling stretch with independent restaurants, beach clubs, and smaller hotels. Great for day visitors.

El Cortecito: Bávaro’s “town beach” — a bit more rustic, with local seafood restaurants right on the sand and a small pier with boat rentals. A favorite among budget travelers.

Best Things to Do on Bávaro Beach

  • Swim and snorkel in the calm reef-protected waters.
  • Rent a sunbed and umbrella at one of the many beach clubs.
  • Horseback riding along the shoreline at sunset.
  • Parasailing for spectacular aerial views of the coastline.
  • Banana boat rides — a fun option for families and groups.
  • Seafood lunch at El Cortecito or Los Corales beach restaurants.
  • Kite surfing in the windier months (winter brings consistent trade winds).

When to Visit Bávaro Beach

The beach is glorious year-round, but the best months are November through April — the dry season, when rainfall is minimal and the trade winds keep temperatures comfortable. May through October brings more humidity and occasional afternoon rain showers, but the beach is still wonderful and hotel rates are lower.

Getting to Bávaro Beach

If you’re staying at a Bávaro resort, you’re already on the beach. If you’re visiting from outside the resort zone:

  • Guaguas (local minibuses) run along the main road for very little cost.
  • Taxis from Punta Cana airport to the beach zone cost approximately $20–30 USD.
  • Excursion packages often include beach time as part of a broader activity day.

Bávaro Beach vs. Saona Island

Both are spectacular, but they offer different experiences. Bávaro is your resort beach — convenient, developed, and beautifully maintained. Saona Island is a wilder, more remote paradise that requires a boat trip to reach and delivers a more adventurous, day-trip experience. If you have the time, do both.
