20 Essential Punta Cana Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors
Planning your first trip to Punta Cana? These insider tips will help you get the most out of your Dominican Republic vacation — from packing essentials to money-saving advice.
Punta Cana Excursions
Punta Cana is one of the most visited destinations in the Caribbean — and for good reason. But first-time visitors often miss out on the best experiences, or make easily avoidable mistakes. Here are 20 essential tips to help you have the perfect Punta Cana vacation.
Before You Go
1. Book excursions in advance. Popular tours like Saona Island sell out weeks in advance during high season (December–April). Don’t leave it until you arrive.
2. Get travel insurance. While Punta Cana is generally safe, travel insurance protects you against trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost luggage. It’s worth the cost of peace of mind.
3. Check visa requirements. Most visitors from the US, Canada, UK, and EU do not need a visa for the Dominican Republic. However, a tourist card is included in your airfare or purchased on arrival.
4. Bring US Dollars. The USD is widely accepted throughout Punta Cana’s tourist zone. Dominican Pesos (DOP) are the local currency, but you’ll rarely need them in the resort area.
5. Pack reef-safe sunscreen. Standard sunscreens containing oxybenzone damage coral reefs. Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect both yourself and the ocean.
At the Resort
6. Don’t spend every day at the pool. All-inclusive resorts are comfortable, but Punta Cana’s true magic lies in its excursions, local food, and natural wonders. Venture out at least a couple of days.
7. Tip your resort staff. While tips are not mandatory at all-inclusives, the staff work extremely hard and tips are always appreciated. $1–2 per drink and $5–10 for housekeeping per day is standard.
8. Stay hydrated. The Caribbean sun is intense. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you’re out on excursions.
9. Protect your valuables. Use the in-room safe for your passport, extra cash, and electronics when you’re at the beach or pool.
10. Enjoy the local food. Try sancocho (Dominican stew), mangu (mashed plantains), fresh grilled fish, and tostones (fried plantains). Many resorts offer Dominican night or a la carte Dominican restaurants.
During Excursions
11. Book hotel-pickup tours. Always choose excursions that include pickup and drop-off from your resort. This saves time and eliminates the stress of finding your own way.
12. Arrive on time for pickup. Tour operators run on a tight schedule, especially for full-day excursions. Be ready in the hotel lobby 10 minutes before your scheduled pickup time.
13. Bring a waterproof phone case. Most Punta Cana excursions involve water — catamaran trips, snorkeling, beach days. A waterproof case protects your phone and lets you capture great photos underwater.
14. Wear water shoes or sandals. Some beaches and snorkeling areas have rocky entrances. Water shoes make a big difference in comfort.
15. Keep cash for tips. Your excursion guide and driver work hard to make your experience special. Budget $10–15 per couple for tips on a full-day tour.
Safety & Health
16. Don’t drink tap water. Stick to bottled water throughout your stay, including when brushing your teeth.
17. Use mosquito repellent. While Punta Cana’s risk is low, dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses exist in the Caribbean. Use repellent, especially in the evenings and during outdoor activities.
18. Swim at patrolled beaches. Punta Cana’s resort beaches are patrolled by lifeguards. Outside of the resort zone, use caution and check ocean conditions before swimming.
19. Be cautious with street food. The local food scene is wonderful, but stick to reputable restaurants and vendors, especially if you have a sensitive stomach.
20. Respect the environment. Punta Cana’s natural beauty — its beaches, coral reefs, and wildlife — depends on responsible tourism. Don’t remove shells, coral, or starfish from the ocean, and always dispose of trash properly.
